I grew up with this dazzler in Virginia, but familiarity dulled my eye; I’d not thought much about the subtle color variations of the fabulous tuxedo suits that both male and female blue jays rock. As I studied photos of the common North American jay species, I looked closely at how the blues change color in different lighting conditions. I wanted to find the “truest” hues for the Field Guide color column, and my efforts led me to think about how our *human* eyes perceive color differently than other animals. That’s part of what this Field Guide project is about – the specific (literally) way the human animal sees and catalogs 👁️, and how that “hard-wired” process shapes our relationship with the rest of everything. This is the color breakdown of a blue jay seen in profile by a human, but how does a blue jay appear to a blue jay? Honestly, we don’t know…although plenty of good people are looking at corvid vision. 👀

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
