Field Guide : Green Honeycreeper (Female)

$36.00

Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.

Dominated by vivid greens of sap, forest, lime, and apple, the female green honeycreeper is aptly named. In fact, her’s is the greenest color column I’ve created to date. Her turquoise male consort, however – he’s more blue than green. That makes this bird something of a rarity; the species’ common name is based on attributes of the female, not the male.

I hoped to see this Central and South American rainforest tanager during my family’s spring 2023 trip to Belize. Alas, it was one of the “species that got away.” Not that they’re easy to see, in any case…especially the females. High in the forest canopy among the leaves, the birds are near-perfectly camouflaged, and it’s there that they build small, cup-shaped nests of dead leaves and fungal filaments, lined and secured with fine materials like animal hair and spider web. The female honeycreeper lays two eggs in this elegant little nest and incubates them for two weeks. The youngsters exhibit the same coloration as their mother, with males turning turquoise only in adolescence.

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
