Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.

A respected arts writer once told me I should ditch my first name and go by one of my middle names. Anton Reiger, he insisted, sounded more substantive and worldly. “Christopher is so ordinary, so forgettable. But Anton! That’s an artist’s name!” I recalled that conversation as I considered the house finch. The arts writer might dismiss its common name as bland and domestic. But “blood-rumped Mexican bird”! There’s a bird’s name! Fortunately, that *is* its name; its scientific binomial is Haemorhous mexicanus. 🩸🍑🇲🇽 The profile view on which I base the “Field Guide” color columns doesn’t allow me to see much of the house finch’s blood red rump, but the bird’s crown, chin, nape, and breast are washed in crimson, chili red, and salmon. Those striking colors are partly due to the finch’s diet (along with individual genetic fitness); males that consume foods low in carotenoids will appear more yellow in color than reddish. I guess that would make them “butter butts,” 🧈🍑…but that nickname’s already claimed.

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
