In September 2021, I released a Field Guide poster featuring a male lesser goldfinch. So why another poster for the same species, and why does this poster’s color column look so different from the first?

Lesser goldfinch plumage differs across various regional populations. This poster’s color column is based on the “black-backed” outfit that male lessers wear in the eastern portion of their range – Arizona, Texas, and eastern Mexico - as well as the southern reaches – into Central and South America. These birds appear quite distinct from the western, “green-backed” males that I enjoy watching in my California yard. The color column of the first lesser goldfinch poster was based on the “green-backed” race or ecotype; when I released it, I promised to create a poster for the “black-backed” morph. Voila! So….who wore it better? 🕴️😉

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).
