Field Guide : Lewis's Woodpecker

$36.00

Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.

The Lewis’s woodpecker is the only member of its family that looks like Christmas. The large woodpecker dons its gay apparel, a cool white mantle and a chatoyant cloak (and hood) of midnight, teal, olive, and hunter greens. Its face, breast, and belly complement the cloak with crimson, carmine, pink, and salmon.

But this bird is no mere bauble. It’s an exceptional woodpecker in a number of ways. When it flies, it lacks the characteristic up-down or undulating movement of most woodpeckers; instead, its size, shape, and deliberate, full flaps call to mind a crow. When it eats insects, it usually “hawks” like a flycatcher, jumping from a perch to capture prey on the wing. Perhaps its most notable distinction, though, is its voice…or lack thereof. Woodpeckers are a talkative bunch, but the Lewis’s woodpecker is relatively quiet, which means, despite its Yuletide outfit, it’s not much of a caroler.

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
