Field Guide : Mourning Dove

$36.00

Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.

As I pored over mourning dove photos to isolate the mourning dove’s “truest” colors, I realized its color column was going to be the most complex to date. I love that the base of this 19-color-band column features ashy cerulean and tea green, an airy punctuation mark under a column dominated by warm umber, tan, and khaki.

Even though I’m very familiar with the mourning dove (as a child, I handled countless individuals and participated in capture-and-release banding programs), the column surprised me; I presumed it would be considerably cooler on the whole, dominated by greys rather than browns and beiges. In fact, dove seen in cool light *do* appear predominantly grey (and they are often portrayed this way in field guides), but in neutral lighting, the plumage is revealed to be considerably warmer. Once again, the Field Guide project demonstrates that even years of casual observation are colored (heh) by one’s expectations.

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
