Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.

Southeastern Australia and Tasmania are home to the remarkable pink robin, a small, plump bird partial to the region’s dense eucalyptus forests and temperate rainforests, where they breed and nest, and dry, shrub-heavy habitat when they’re not nesting. No matter the habitat, though, you’re lucky to glimpse this striking charcoal, indigo grey, and cotton candy pink bird. It’s usually heard – a tik, tik, tik call from the undergrowth – and not seen. Out of view on tree trunks, in shrubs, or on the ground below, they feed on caterpillars, wasps, beetles, flies, and ants.

Like the American robin, the pink robin had its common name assigned by English settlers seeking through-lines to the “old country.” When they encountered a small, round bird with a bold breast and belly in Australia, they dubbed it a “robin” because that’s what they called the small, round bird with a bold breast and face they’d known in England. The things we carry with us. I wondered about the aboriginal name for this species, and online searching turned up the word tennuluk, simply translated as “robin,” which is obviously *not* the aboriginal meaning, but, try as I might, I could find no resources breaking down the etymology of the name. The things the Internet values…or doesn’t.

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
