The In Between
(2022 ā€“ present)

Ostensibly, crepuscular animal species, those most active at dawn and dusk, are the central players in this body of work, but The In Between is no less focused on the experience of twilight itself, the transfigurative borderland between light and dark. These liminal stretches between night and day and day and night are electric with possibility, periods of heightened awareness and anticipation for both predator and prey. Many of my most memorable outdoors experiences are soaked in the deep rusts, blues, and purples of twilight; I associate the time of day with magic.

To create each image, I paint watercolor, gouache, and sumi ink elements on paper, then photograph these and use Photoshop to digitally layer the constituent parts and play around with composition. From there, it's back and forth between the digital workspace and brush on paper until Iā€™m satisfied.

The name of each piece is a translation of the scientific binomial of the featured animal.
