Field Guide : Common Myna

$36.00

Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.

The common myna’s scientific binomial (Acridotheres tristis) translates as “gloomy locust hunter,” but the myna is a gregarious and omnivorous bird, much like its seemingly ubiquitous sturnid cousin, the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris). Also like the starling, the myna is rapidly expanding its global range. A tropical species that thrives alongside humans, the myna’s spread is aided by climate change and increasing human development. It’s classified as “invasive” in many countries where it’s become established, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considers the myna one of “the world’s worst invasive species.” As is so often the case with invasive species, we’re responsible for the myna's spread; with few exceptions, the myna was *intentionally* introduced by humans to control insect populations. It’s one more, um, "gloomy" cautionary tale about using non-native species as biological controls.

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
