Field Guide : Great Blue Heron

$36.00

Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.

My last name, Reiger, means heron. When I was very young, before I understood what Reiger meant, I assumed my father had named the coastal Virginia farm I grew up on Heron Hill because of the many great blue herons that frequented the home pond. On countless mornings, I watched the rangy predators stalk the shallows, necks “S”ed and ready to strike. Most people think of great blues as fish eaters, but on the Shore, I saw them take frogs as often as they did fish, and my father told me they especially liked catching muskrats. Here, in California, where I usually see them hunting dry hillsides, I’ve seen them take voles, gophers, and even (what I believe was) a small rabbit. When most people think of supreme predators among birds, it’s raptors that come to mind; don’t sleep on the herons.

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
