Field Guide : Purple Gallinule

$36.00

Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.

One of the remarkable creatures I observed a lot during my two-week stint as an Artist In Residence in Everglades National Park was the purple gallinule (Porphyrio martinicus). An opportunistic omnivore, the gallinule hunts in and along the waterways of the Everglades with supreme ability; its long legs and oversized feet are as well suited to carrying it across waterlily and spatterdock pads as they are to climbing reeds and branches. It’s the gallinule’s exuberant attire, though, that makes it stand out among all water and wetland birds. Adults shimmer with iridescent lapis lazuli and aquamarine, but they’re also painted with school bus yellow, cherry red, olive, coyote brown, sky blue, and more. As result, the purple gallinule’s color column is so varied and saturated, one could mistake it for a comic strip panel color sampling!

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
