if you use the word “seagull” around me, you’ll learn it’s one of my peccadillos. Although ubiquitous, “seagull” is a misnomer; many gull species range far from the ocean. The ring-billed gull is an excellent example. In a family of birds that thrives alongside humans (mostly because of how much waste we generate), the ring-billed gull stands out as *especially* human-adapted. If you insist on a nickname, instead of “seagull” you might try “landfill gull” or “shopping mall parking lot gull.” (I opt for with “French fry gull.” 🍟) These gulls thrive in urban and suburban settings, both coastal and inland. In fact, ring-billed gulls typically breed around bodies of fresh water in the interior United States and Canada. But don’t let their abundance or scavenging acumen be cause to disparage these animals; they’re incredible predators as well as standout parents, forming seasonally monogamous pairs that together construct the nest and brood/rear the young. Plus, like most gull species, the ring-billed males *and* females appear positively princely in breeding plumage. 👑
