Field Guide : Roseate Spoonbill

$36.00

Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.

The roseate spoonbill’s jaw-dropping combo of amaranth, salmon, pink carnation, saffron, and honeydew is, just, wow. Little wonder Lizzo’s “Good As Hell” pops into my head when I see these remarkable birds!

“See” in photos, that is. While I’ve had the privilege of observing these astonishing birds in the Florida Everglades, they’re more readily encountered in the West Indies and parts of South America than they are in the United States, where their range is generally confined to coastal Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. Wading through mangroves, marshes, and brackish estuaries with their unmistakable mix of dance floor fancy and prehistoric intensity, the roseate spoonbill can seem out of place and out of time. It’s sometimes described as a dinosaur, or, in a poem I recently read by Rose Strode, “a gentle monster of incompatible beauties frankensteined together.” The famed ornithologist and illustrator Roger Tory Peterson said the spoonbill is “one of the most breathtaking of the world’s weirdest birds.” Whatever. Spoonbill don’t GAF. 🎶 Just walk your fine a$$ out the door. 🎶

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
