Field Guide : Wild Turkey (Eastern Male)

$36.00

Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.

With 25 different colors in his color column, including some of the bronzes and greens that pop iridescent at the right angle, this is one fine looking bird – and one very challenging color column to create! 😓 Still, it’s not the number of color bands in your color column that matters; it’s the pleasing combination – the quality of the palette – and the wild turkey’s is unquestionably appealing.

This color column represents what I think of as an “average” Eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris), one of the six turkey subspecies in North America. While domesticated turkeys are often considered to be one of the dumbest animals on earth, it’s just the opposite for their wild cousins. They’re one of the wariest creatures in the woods, possessing excellent eyesight (full-color vision three times better than our 20/20 capability, with a 270-degree field of view), the ability/speed to outrun a dog, and flight skills rivaling those of a pheasant.

Oh, and about that name – yes, turkeys are named after the country. The name was either given because the bird was most often delivered to England via trade routes that passed through Turkey or because English settlers thought the bird resembled a species of guinea fowl they associated with Turkish traders. So the bird’s name has absolutely nothing, really, to do with the bird. Doh.

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
